A house is not a home

Rein Kooyman

“Once overlooked on the ground, now transformed into spherical installations. Each stone in the collection is carefully knotted with hemp rope and assembled separately, which requires a meticulous commitment to physical and mental discipline. In this repetitive act, performed on the spot in the gallery, I experience a temporary simplification of my human existence. Time becomes liquid: a space in which past, present and future flow seamlessly. The repetition frees me from the grip of time and offers a short-term escape from the limitations we often impose on ourselves. To hang the 2,000 bricks incorporated in the installation, four kilometers of wire are needed. This results in a visual and tangible representation of my journey in the National Park des Écrins and the transformation of these centuries-old stones. It is important to mention that the installation is temporary. At the end of the presentation, I will return the stones to their origin, as a symbol of the cyclical nature of existence and the transience of our human constructions.”

Rein Kooyman's practice is rooted in a continuous dialogue with the landscape, formed by solo walks through various areas. He collects stones, bark and other organic materials — each with its own history of time, erosion and change — and transforms them into sculptural installations that reinforce the often overlooked rhythms of nature. These works do not impose themselves, but function as meditations on transience, and invite reflection on our place in a world that exists beyond human control.
